New Work Order

The title is borrowed from a book by Gee, Hull, and Lankshear (1996), which explored the emergent discourse of the new market economy. In superimposing young girls of color working on laptops unto the famous “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photo by Charles Ebbets, I am questioning whether or not the recent push for teaching urban students rote computer coding skills isn’t merely just the training of a new “blue collar” class of workers.
